2017-2018 September Newsletter
1st September, 2017
The school bell has rung! Welcome back to our Kei Tsz family and a warm welcome to our new students. Our school will continue the ‘Sunshine Calls’ scheme and the class teachers will contact the parents so as to gain a better understanding of students’ behaviour at home and share experiences from parenting. You are greatly welcome to raise any questions during these conversations.
Our school has always been committed to providing students with a comfortable and safe learning environment. As a result, a number of renovation projects and equipment upgrades have been carried out during the summer holiday, including replacing the floor tiles and wires in all classrooms, washing all air-conditioners and refilling the refrigerant and purchasing a large amount of books for the library. Also, the SMART Classroom on LG2 is now in use so that teachers and students are able to make good use of the space to enhance teaching and learning. We are thankful for your support during the school walk-a-thon and it is your generosity that provides us with more resources to build a better learning environment.
Students, have you enjoyed this long holiday? Have you learnt something new? Daisy L. Hung, a Taiwanese scholar pointed out, human learning can be divided into two types: (1) intentional learning which occurs in classrooms deliberately and (2) incidental learning which occurs in daily life intentionally. Both of the learning processes are effective but incidental learning occurs more frequently. Children are learning all the time, regardless of learning from or beyond textbooks. The most important thing is that children enjoy the learning process. This summer holiday, our school designed “My Summer Self-directed Learning Programme” to replace the traditional summer holiday exercises. Through designing interesting topics, we aim at enabling our students to have more exposure to different things in daily life. Also, we step out of the usual learning framework and allow our students to use different methods (i.e. pictures, sound and videos) to express their thinking so as to cultivating their creative thinking and self-learning skills.
Thanks to our Lord, there are some new teachers joining us and devoting themselves to education this year since the number of classes in our school has increased. Kei Tsz Primary School is a loving and caring Christian school. It is always full of laughter here. We create opportunities for our children and give them encouragement and support so that they can have enough freedom and space to study and try their best. Also, we treat our children with tolerance and acceptance so that they can learn from their mistakes and thrive. With the words from the Bible and its guidance, we will live a richer life. Education inherits not only the past, but also creates the future. “But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint” (Isaiah 40:31). We hope that our graduates can get used to their new learning environment and enjoy their secondary school life.
‘Parents and Teachers Joining Hands’ is going to be held on Mondays starting 11th September. Also, there will be a bible study group for parents on Tuesday mornings. Your participation is highly welcome. This year, Astronomy Learning Activities will be held on 22nd September (Friday) with activities such as Interactive Floor game, MiP robots, Chinese paper cutting and making glutinous rice balls. We look forward to your participation.
Aiming at developing the diversity of learning modes, our school has integrated STEM curriculum so as to enhance students’ problem-solving, communication and collaboration skills, and the ability to observe and analyze. We will also organize a wide variety of learning activities for students to enrich their campus life. It is our hope that we can continue to work hand-in-hand to help our children make progress. Here is a bible scripture that I want to share with you. “Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older, they will not leave it” (Proverbs 22:6). Let us work hard together for the sake of our children’s future.
Finally, I wish you all good health and a joyful start to the school year!
