2016-2017 July Newsletter

Dear Parents/ Guardians,
P.6 students, you are going to graduate soon and start a new journey in secondary school. You are going to leave the campus, which you are familiar with and walk into a new one. Have you equipped yourselves well? You are going to transform from the highest grade of primary school to the lowest grade of secondary school. Are you ready to meet the new challenges? As we grow up, we will face a lot of challenges and trials. We need to have high confidence to overcome the difficulties. In the face of difficulties, we should learn to review and reflect on ourselves instead of complaining or giving up. When confronting adversity, we should learn from our experiences and endure the frustration. In favourable circumstances, we need to be humble and reflective.
Dr. Carol Dweck, a psychologist at Stanford University in the United States, suggests that talent only plays a small part in achieving success and the most important thing is growth mindset, which is a person’s attitude in the period of growth. She points out that success is not born but made. People can achieve success by having a growth mindset and developing their talents and abilities through effort and persistence. In order to achieve success, we shouldn’t only go with what is easy over what is more challenging. Indeed, we should have a growth mindset, have the courage to take up challenges and achieve our goals with great efforts.
There are bad times and good times on the journey of life. We should rely on God and follow Jesus and the teaching in the Bible. Therefore, I would like to share a song called “Ordinary People” with you. The lyrics say, “If a person walks against the wind, his power is weakened. God is powerful and He gives me protection. I am an ordinary person and there is nothing to boast about. But everything is possible for me because God backs me up.” I hope you can learn from the song that we don’t need to be anxious when we face changes because God has already prepared the best for us. Let’s continue to pursue our dreams, walk with God and live a different life!
The summer holiday is coming. Have you noticed that we didn’t buy summer holiday exercises this year? Instead, “My Summer Self-directed Learning Programme” will be carried out. The aim of this programme is to encourage students to set their learning goals and ways of learning, and learn to organize their studies and life. The topics are carefully selected and designed by teachers so that students can demonstrate their creativity and problem-solving skills. I hope you will enjoy this special holiday homework. Also, have you been busy arranging different kinds of summer activities for your children? There is some information about playgrounds and museums provided in the summer holiday booklet. You can take your children to play outdoors, visit exhibitions, make some snacks with them or even have a competition with them. You can talk and play more with them rather than asking them to attend a lot of summer courses or tutorials. Children can learn how to communicate and get along well with others and other new skills through the process of playing.
During the summer holiday, are you going to lay in supplies for the new school year? If you are going to buy a new schoolbag for your child, please keep the old one and bring it to school in September to support the “Give My Bag” activity organized by Silver Lining Foundation. The second-hand schoolbag donation project is very meaningful. Let’s send our love and care to the mountain school children through the activity. The details will be announced in the September notice.
This year, $310 was collected to pay for the air-conditioning fee for classrooms and special rooms, and the costs of replacement, repair and maintenance of air-conditioners. Besides, our English Drama Club has joined Active English Drama in Practice Project organized by Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) and Seals Players Foundation Limited. The students are going to perform Peter Pan at 2:30 p.m. on 9th July (Sunday) at Tuen Mun Town Hall.
The school year is about to end. Our 48th Graduation and SMART Classroom Opening Ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. on 8th July (Saturday). P.5 and P.6 parents are invited to attend and give encouragement to the students. Finally, I would like to share a scripture with you, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline" (2 Timothy 1:7).
I wish you all a fruitful and wonderful summer holiday!
