2017-2018 October Newsletter

Dear Parents/ Guardians,
During the Astronomy Learning Activities held on 22nd September, MIP robots and Interactive Floor Projection System activities were used to enhance students’ learning interests and effectiveness. We would like to thank our parents again for your support and active participation in school events such as Parents and Teachers Joining Hands and Astronomy Learning Activities. Your involvement shows the importance of home-school cooperation. Let’s work closely together to nurture the next generation.
I thank God that the work of the school year has started smoothly. This year, our school will work on the development of information technology and e-learning. Programming and Scratch courses have been integrated in P.1 to P.6 IT Project Learning lessons so as to increase students’ interest and enhance their logical thinking and problem-solving skills. Also, as the use of smart phones, tablets and mobile devices has become more common, our school website has adopted Responsive Web Design which allows the webpage to respond to the user’s screen size. As a result, users can view the content of the website more clearly. On our school webpage, eClass is an intranet platform for self-directed learning. Our teachers will upload different resources for students to do self-learning and enhance their learning effectiveness. While Learning Centre, Subject Corners and Class Albums are popular areas among students, parents can make use of the e-notice function to sign school notices and check account balances. They can also save the e-notices as pdf files in their mobile phone so that they can check them anytime they want. I would like to thank the parents who have already starting using e-notices as this method is environmental friendly, and helps reduce the use of paper and teachers’ time for handling these matters.
In order to deliver school information faster and more efficiently, we will use the Whatsapp broadcasting function to send important messages to the whole school or the whole grade level. Relevant parent information has been collected and it is being processed. This broadcasting function is a one-way channel, so please do not respond to or reply the messages. In addition to a number of renovation and equipment replacement conducted during the summer holiday to provide students with a safe and comfortable learning environment, we have adjusted the recess times to meet the students’ needs. Please note that the tests and exams will still be held on the same days of the week, but the subject order will be adjusted slightly (Thursday – Chinese, Friday – General Studies, Monday – English and Tuesday – Maths).
The Sports Day will be held at Hammer Hill Road Sports Ground on 13th October. It is a meaningful learning experience where our students can learn sportsmanship, striving towards goals, following the rules of competition, unleashing potential and displaying perseverance. Since it is a school learning activity, arrangements for parent spectators will not be made. We are sorry for any inconvenience caused.
In October, we can see theme parks advertising about Halloween activities. In fact, in the eighth century, the Pope established 1st November as All Saints' Day (All Hallows Day) dedicated to the saints of the church. Nowadays fewer people commemorate that day. Instead, most people celebrate on 31st October, which is known as the Day of the Dead. It is a day which renders messages of death and fear. With the aim of spreading the word of God and serving the community, our school does not encourage students to engage in activities associated with Halloween. We want to teach our children good values and I therefore encourage you to not allow your children to participate in activities related to Halloween. We should work closely together to curb negative influences and protect our next generation.
The PTA Annual Meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on 20th October (Friday). All parents are cordially invited to attend and participate in parent-school cooperation. The P.5-P.6 Parents’ Day will also take place on the same day and we are looking forward to meeting you. Finally, let us be encouraged by a Bible verse: “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. Don’t give offense to Jews or Gentiles or the church of God. I, too, try to please everyone in everything I do. I don’t just do what is best for me; I do what is best for others so that many may be saved” (1 Corinthians 10: 31-33). Let’s share the same belief and work together to exalt the Lord our God.
