3rd January, 2018

Dear Parents/ Guardians,

The Alumni Reunion Day is held on the first Sunday of December every year. I thank God that a lot of students came back to visit their former teachers and gather with their classmates. An alumni group of teachers and students met and chatted in the School Memorabilia Room to cherish the memories of the school history and the scene was heart-warming. Apart from participating in table tennis matches, basketball games, sharing sessions and singing, the alumni also enjoyed taking photos in front of the banner with the photo of the old campus on it so that they could remember the old days. Teachers and students had a barbeque while they listened to others sing. We had a lot of fun. As the 50th anniversary ceremony is coming next year, it is hoped that more alumni can came back and celebrate the jubilee.

Our school values home-school collaboration. Therefore, sunshine telephone calls and home visits will be carried out in phrases by our teachers to provide more opportunities for parents to further strengthen the home-school relationship and to work together with teachers to help the children grow. The home visits for P.6 students have started in order to let parents have a better understanding of their children’s learning and have an in-depth discussion on selecting secondary schools. Also, parent lesson observations will be carried out three times throughout the school year so as to allow our parents to have a better understanding of their children’s learning at school. The P.1 and P.4 parent lesson observations were successfully completed on 18th December. Thank you for your active participation. The lesson observation for other grades will be conducted in the second term. Please refer to the upcoming notices for more details.

The New Year has come and we should teach our students the importance of planning for the future. Therefore, parents should encourage their children to set learning objectives for the new year. Parents play an important role in educating children but may sometimes have some concerns about the ways of teaching. Time Magazine once posted an article, How to Make Your Kids Smarter: 10 Steps Backed By Science, which listed ten ways of raising children based on scientific grounds. I would like to share with you here.

Firstly, music makes children smarter as music can stimulate the development of the brain, improve coordination and help children use their eyes, hands and left and right brains flexibly. Secondly, exercise and sports can improve memory and ability to learn. Research found that students pick up new vocabulary words 20 percent faster and show 30 percent increase in memory after exercise. Thirdly, reading with children enhances interaction. Parents can make use of various expressions and intonation to enhance interaction and children's response to texts, graphics, expressions and intonation. Fourthly, children need to have sufficient sleep. Students who have better academic performance have more sleep than average. Fifthly, it is important to help children develop self-discipline, a sense of responsibility and courage. The more self-disciplined children are the more independent they become. Sixthly, active learning should be encouraged. Parents should enable children to understand that “doing it yourself” is more important than “watching without doing”. Seventhly, children should have a healthy eating habit, which allows them to maintain a good mental state and improve their learning efficiency. Eighthly, happy kids are successful kids. Parents should grow and enjoy the process of growth with children. Ninthly, it is important to integrate into the community. Parents should teach their children how to treat people with an appropriate attitude so that they can enjoy interacting with others. Tenthly, believe in your children, explore and appreciate their strengths, give them more encouragement and show them more support and trust so that they can build up their self-confidence.

The above ten points are consistent with our school’s goals. We have specialized training in music and sports so that students can have access to music and sports at an early age, which facilitates their IQ and brain development. Besides, with regard to the lesson design, different subjects have used interactive learning activities to stimulate students’ thinking and cultivate their spirit of inquiry. Furthermore, our school has tutorial lessons every day so that students can have time to work on their homework at school and therefore have more free time after school. In respect to the moral education, we also nurture children through different themes and Bible stories to help them establish positive values.

In the process of children's growth, both school and parents have a significant influence on children. Our school is convinced that we can create a better future for our children under home-school collaboration. The first term exam will be held from 11th to 16th January. We hope that you can encourage your children more and enhance their self-confidence so as to benefit their learning. Finally, I would like to send you all words from God: "At that time the Spirit of the Lord will come powerfully upon you, and you will prophesy with them. You will be changed into a different person" (1 Samuel 10:6).

I wish you a wonderful new year and a new beginning!

Sincerely,

Chiu Kit Wa
