The Astronomy Learning Activities held on 22nd September was a success. Were you able to locate the position of the moon? Did you have fun participating in different activities, such as the giant cardboard maze, Interactive Floor Projection System activities, Xbox games, MIP robot programming, moon cake-making and traditional craftsmanship experiences? I believe all of you had some precious and memorable moments that night. We would like to thank our parents again for your support and active participation in school events such as Parents and Teachers Joining Hands and Astronomy Learning Activities. Your involvement shows the importance of home-school cooperation. Let’s work closely together to nurture the next generation.
Students, do you still remember what Mr. Wong Ka Ki shared in the morning assembly? What do you think of the word “gratitude”? Do you remember Super Typhoon Mangkhut? Does the occurrence of a typhoon means a holiday to you? While you were watching TV, playing computer games and sleeping at home, did you think of the people who were risking their lives to serve us under the storm? Are you grateful for them? Have you expressed your gratitude by writing a card? Parents, how would you guide your child to think about the meaning of gratitude?
Gratitude is actually crucial to living a happy life. Today’s children are the apples of their parents’ eye and parents would do everything for their children and continually provide them with material supplies. As a result, children may only think of their own needs and seldom consider others’ feelings. They may become more reliant on others and take others’ effort for granted. Many people say that they don’t want their children to “lose at the starting line” but in fact, parents are children’s starting line. We should teach our children learn to be grateful, to put themselves in others’ shoes and not to complain easily starting in early childhood. When children learn to see things from different perspectives, their lives will be full of positive energy. Also, parents can review things you are thankful for in daily life with you children. For example, writing down the joyful things before going to bed and writing thank you cards to people around us occasionally are ways to make gratitude become a part of our lives. Parents should learn to let go at the right time and let children try to solve problems by themselves, which helps facilitate their mental development. More importantly, children can learn that happiness is not inevitable and we need to cherish and give thanks in all circumstances.
The Sports Day will be held at Hammer Hill Road Sports Ground on 5th October. It is a meaningful learning experience where our students can learn sportsmanship, strive towards goals, follow the rules of competition, unleash potential and display perseverance. At the same time, they can learn the manners of being spectators – cheer for the winners and encourage the losers. In the award ceremony, we should thank those who have provided assistance for us and show appreciation to the winners and share their joy.
In October, we can see theme parks advertising about Halloween activities. In fact, in the eighth century, the Pope established 1st November as All Saints' Day (All Hallows Day) dedicated to the saints of the church. It was then abbreviated as Halloween. Nowadays fewer people commemorate that day and they call 31st October (the eve of All Hallows Day) as Halloween. Halloween is not funny at all but it renders messages of death and fear. As teachers and parents, we should teach our children good values and prevent them from participating in activities related to Halloween.
The PTA Annual Meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on 19th October (Friday). All parents are cordially invited to attend and participate in parent-school cooperation. The P.5-P.6 Parents’ Day will also take place on the same day and we have invited the principal of C.C.C. Ming Kei College, Dr. Eddy Lee to share on the topic “How to prepare for secondary school allocation”. We are looking forward to your participation. This year, our school’s major concerns are reading and positive education. We should enable our children to be exposed to more positive experiences and enhance their resilience. Let’s work together to build a positive and happy learning environment for them. Finally, let us be encouraged by a Bible verse: “Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18).
