Dear Parents / Guardians,

Stepping into the Year of the Pig, I wish you all the best and may God’s grace be always with you. During the Lunar New Year, you can see pig decorations in many places. What do you know about pigs? Since ancient times, pigs have played an important role in Chinese culture. They represent courage, blessing, loyalty and auspiciousness. The bottom component of the Chinese character “家” (which means home) is "豕", which refers to pigs. Pigs often eat and sleep. They present the image of being chubby and lazy. Some people even associate the habits of pigs with the inertia of human beings. However, according to a neuroscientist of the Emory University in America, Lori Marino’s research, pigs have strong long-term memory and high cognitive ability. They are even smarter than dogs. This implies that when God creates the world, everything has its value and significance. We should not look down upon our own strength.

Students, what are your New Year resolutions? Have you set a new goal for yourselves? Have you ever imagined what society will be like in the future with the advancement of technology? What challenges are you going to face? According to a survey conducted by a business social platform “LinkedIn” in 2019, many multinational enterprises are not only looking for talents with degrees, but are more concerned about their creative mindsets and personal traits such as communication, social and time management skills in this booming era. In order to cultivate students' personal traits and develop their potential, our school’s three-year major concerns focus to establish a positive campus through cultivating students' positive values and attitudes; strengthening the reading culture and facilitating students’ self-directed learning ability.

Our school’s walk-a-thon was successfully held on 16th February. We thank God for watching over us and keeping us safe. The weather was fine and suitable for hiking so it was a good opportunity for us to exercise ourselves. All teachers and students set off from school and walked to Wong Tai Sin Service Reservoir Playground. We chatted with each other along the way, and sang and danced to praise the God. We had a pleasant morning. Also, we looked at the cross on the rooftop of our school, which stands on top of Tsz Wan Shan, which is a symbol for the great love of God for the whole community. On behalf of our school, I would like to thank you for all the donations, support and participation. The funds raised will be used to buy more books for the library and improve our learning and teaching facilities.

Thank for all of the parents that attended Parents’ Day. Have you reviewed the learning performance with your children with tolerance? Have you praised and encouraged your children instead of scolding them? I would like to share a story with you. When a mother knew that her son had got ninety marks, she wanted to say, “You are a genius! What gifts do you want?” However, she didn’t do that. Instead, she told her son, “You must have worked very hard to achieve such good results. We really appreciate your effort!” After hearing it, her son was so excited and had a great sense of achievement. The most effective way to increase children’s learning motivation is intrinsic reinforcement, which refers to the satisfaction the thing itself brings. When you praise your child, instead of saying something like “you’re so smart” or “you’re a genius”, you should specifically point out specific aspects that you appreciate. When you encourage your child, you should recognize their efforts instead of emphasizing the results. Besides, parents should let children learn that it is inevitable to encounter setbacks during the learning process. Knowing how to overcome setbacks is more important than gaining high marks.

Every child wants to be valued and affirmed. Encouragement and appreciation are the keys to helping children improve. The tests will be held in late March. Parents, I hope you can encourage your children more and enhance their confidence. Let me share a Bible verse with you as an encouragement: “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7).

Sincerely,

Chiu Kit Wa
